Bacon Wrapped Shrimp is a simple appetizer (or side!) for a little surf and turf with tart and naturally sweet cherry balsamic glaze.
Bacon Wrapped Shrimp was created during my first catering gig.
I cannot believe that I’ve had my first catered champagne party (geeking out)! As I continue to create in the kitchen, cook and write, I am exploring different ways to make TJH my full time job. The champagne party that I hosted to support The O’Conner House made me realize that catering could be an integral part of my business.
I was so happy to volunteer my time for such a wonderful organization that provides a safe home and haven for single, pregnant and homeless women. The home, located in Carmel, IN (my home town!) helps improve mothers’ lives for themselves and their children through mentoring and education. A champagne party with TJH was auctioned off at their annual event and someone actually bought it! So, I put on my apron, brushed my nerves aside and put my best apps forward.
Bacon Wrapped Shrimp took the party hostess’ favorite ingredients and became a new app in her honor.
The Champagne Party package included 3 bottles of champagne and 5 apps – one created specifically for the event and the hostess. Peggy sent me the below ingredients to create with:
And so, Bacon Wrapped Shrimp with Cherry Balsamic Glaze came to be.
As I started to prep for the big party, I was so excited about the addition of cherry balsamic glaze to a meat and seafood-lover’s staple. However, I ended up frustrated with expensive empty bottles of balsamic, several dirty pans and no balsamic reduction (and probably an empty bottle of champagne too). How do they make it look so easy?! What am I missing? Are the cherries the problem (read: totes)?!
After the third time, I reached out to my #WCW: extremely talented blogger and photographer, Jess of Plays Well with Butter. Her balsamic glaze is perfection! See here, here and here. I had to know her secret. And you have to promise not to tell.
Jess’ quick solution for the Bacon Wrapped Shrimp with Cherry Balsamic Glaze is perfect for my busy hostesses.
With Jess’ help, I eventually found out the issue with my balsamic reduction, but I prefer her shortcut. Especially since it took around an hour to reduce. The solution? In Jess’ words, “GIRL! Buy that shit from the store!!!”. Trader Joe’s, oh how I love you. And your Balsamic Glaze.
Balsamic Glaze is a staple in Jess’ kitchen because it’s reasonably-priced, quick and does not stink up your kitchen. I’ve been using it ever since and am so thankful for the rec, as it’s perfect for Bacon Wrapped Shrimp and so many other apps.
In summary, Bacon Wrapped Shrimp is quick and easy app with an unexpected cherry-balsamic taste.
The Jolly Hostess twist this week combines savory bacon with shrimp for a flavor-packed bite. Add cherry balsamic glaze (and not loads of time in the kitchen) for an interesting dish that every one will crave. Not convinced? It was the favorite app at the champagne party – so you must give it a try!
